Architectural salvage doors that come from old buildings that are being demolished have a tremendous impact when they are reused in the homes of today. Because there are only a certain number of doors that qualify as antique doors, in terms of age as well as condition, they are truly a treasure that will enhance the look of your period home for years to come. Salvage doors can be used both indoors and outside to beautiful effect.
For example, if your home has more of a "rustic" look, with cedar shakes and an abundance of trees, bushes, plants, and flowers in and around the house, the beauty of natural wood would be a fitting choice. But if your exterior has a more "refined" look, an attractive stamped steel garage door might do better. Those with aluminum or vinyl siding covering their house and garage may want to go with a matching aluminum or vinyl garage door.
The framework consists of two stiles running vertically up the door and two or more rails running horizontally across the door. The stiles and rails are usually joined together with mortise-and-tenon joints, although there is a trend towards replacing these by dowel joints. The inside edges of the frame are grooved to take the sides of the panels and may be decorated with a moulding.
These doors are slightly different than the normal scissor doors, in the sense that they are designed to open slightly outwards and then open in the manner of a scissor door. This allows the top edge of the door to clear the door frame. It also allows the top edge to clear the A-pillar of the car.
